In 2022, in a small town in Bancroft, Ontario, a farmer’s market re opened after the pandemic and a small group of us came together, meeting each week with a clear vision and purpose; to bring the best locally grown and made food to our community.

 

But there was a missing piece.

 

Week after week we watched our visitors wander around with takeout cups of mediocre beverage and asked ourselves the question; where can we get the best of the best of something that we can’t grow here in Canada for our customers, our families and ourselves?

 

After much searching, researching and tasting, we were introduced to the Barahona Typica bean by a friend in the Dominican Republic. A rare single varietal, this humble plant is descended from the first Typica seeds brought to the Dominican in 1805. Grown today by a 6th generation female farmer on the very same slopes of the Bahoruco Mountains. We were granted the pleasure of samples to try and shortly after, the great honour of being the first importers of this remarkable bean into Canada.

 

Our market patrons loved not only the coffee but the passion, care and attention that Emmie placed in serving it. The wife of a beekeeper, Emmie knew there was only one way to make the perfect cup, not with highly processed sugars but with nature’s own gold! Four years later that small town farmer’s market still serves up the best cup ‘o joe around and now Emmie even travels to other small town markets in the summer season in her self converted and highly bespoke coffee truck bringing her treasure for all to enjoy.
